How We Help You Get Relief
Possible Causes of Dizziness & Vertigo
Dizziness – vertigo can have a multitude of causes: e.g. head injuries, whiplash, nutritional deficiencies, traumatic vehicle accidents, sports injuries, ear problems, dehydration, high or low blood pressure, infections, pregnancy related issues and even medications.
These can lead to an imbalance in the vestibular system (sense of balance and spatial orientation) of the inner ear, parts of the brain or sensory nerve pathways.
If dizziness is recurring or lasts over longer time periods, a doctor should be consulted to rule out stroke, tumors and neurological diseases like Meniere’s disease and / or multiple sclerosis to name a few.
Determining the Cause
Dr. Mulhern often sees patients where dizziness – vertigo are recurrent or persistent, even after medical treatment. Usually, the common cause is a previous ear infection or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). However, misalignments of the spine may cause the dizziness / vertigo problems. A structural adjustments performed by a licensed chiropractic physician can correct these difficulties, which medical doctors are not trained to correct.
Other common causes can be acute vestibular neuritis (nerve pain), labyrinthitis (a condition which affects the inner ear workings and impairs hearing) or a previous viral infection such as a common cold or even the flu.
Chiropractic Diagnosis of Dizziness or Vertigo
During your 1st visit, Dr. Mulhern goes through your medical history with you. He then performs a extensive physical, muscle and neurological exam. He may also perform other specialized tests. This helps identify the actual causes of your pain, problems and symptoms. He wants to know all your complaints to determine the best ways to help you attain optimal health.
Based on these findings, precise chiropractic adjustments are performed. In many cases, the ears also need to be adjusted (to correct the 3 smallest bones in your body). In addition, Dr. Mulhern may recommend specific nutritional products and home exercises to support faster healing.
Pharmaceutical Drugs & Dizziness
There are many pharmaceutical drugs that may cause vertigo or dizziness (and you will have to discuss any drug changes with your MD). Among those are antibiotics, blood pressure medications, pain killers, drugs for depression or anxiety and even drugs to treat cancer. We will ask you about prescription medications during your 1st visit.
On the other hand, there are a variety of pharmaceutical drugs that are prescribed for vertigo or dizziness. They may offer temporary relief. However, they don’t eliminate the actual cause of your problems.
